Centennial Year Church Events

October 30, 2005 - The Junior R Club (Fellowship of Orthodox Christians in America) sponsored a Fall Masquerade Party on Sunday afternoon in the Church Hall for the young people of our parish. This was not a Halloween Party as the Orthodox Church does not observe that civil occasion but rather an opportunity for the "little ones" to dress up in their "masquerade finery" and to share in some fellowship in the Fall season. There were games, refreshments, and fun things to do and the only qualification for admission to the event was the wearing of an appropriate, nice costume. Below are scenes from that gathering.

Many activities were planned for the afternoon. Above and below, children began the afternoon by decorating pumpkins.

Above and below left, there was dancing accompanied by music. Below right, Mrs. Allison Steffaro, advisor to the Junior R Club, presided over the afternoon's activities, aided by mothers of the parish's children.

Above and below - at times it was not clear who was having more fun at the gathering - the children or their parents! Parents brought cameras to record their children's costumes in photos.

Above and below - at one point the elder children agreed to be wrapped in tissue paper so that the younger children might have some fun at their expense.

Above right - the children participated in a limbo dance - aka "how low can you go?". The bar was held by a "baby" and an "angel" and at this height of the bar no one had clearance problems!

Above right and below left - as the distance between the limbo bar and the floor decreased, some participants resorted to "unlimbo-like" strategems to clear the bar!

The height of the bar continues to decrease to the point where the bar holder and the participants wear expressions of incredulity (above right)!

There was a parade of costumes as well during the afternoon's activities. Individual prizes were given for various costume categories, however, every child who came to the event to have some fun was a winner! Above and below - all of this activity can spurn an appetite and there were plenty of festively-decorated refreshments for all who were present.

The above participant - if you could see him or her - is already extending an invitation to you to be at next year's Masquerade Party!
