Centennial Year Church Services

April 29, 2005 -   As the saddest day on the Orthodox Christian calendar draws to a close, an evening service - the Matins of Great and Holy Saturday with Lamentations and Procession - is held during which the burial shroud of Jesus - known as the Winding Sheet - is processed around the exterior of the Church. Below are scenes from that evening service.

Above left, a portion of Whitehead Avenue is cordoned off to facilitate the procession as parishioners await outside (above right) with the processional banners to be carried at the beginning of the procession.

Above left, the processional Cross foretells the expectation of the Resurrection on Pascha. Above right, parishioners hold candles which they will carry in procession. Below left, choir members leave their loft to assemble behind the processional banners. Below right, altar servers leave the Church in front of the Winding Sheet accompanied by Reader Joseph Shaluha.

Above and below, V. Rev. Sergius Kuharsky, our former pastor, censes in advance of the Winding Sheet. Beneath the Winding Sheet is our pastor, Rev. David Garretson who carries the Book of Holy Gospels. The processional Cross, carried by Church President James Kornafel, is at the head of the procession.

As the procession reenters the Church, parishioners return to their places for the conclusion of the service.
